SEATTLE, WASH. - Midfielder Zach Mathers has been named to the USL Team of the Week for Week 14 after tallying three goals and an assist over a span of two matches. On Monday, the midfielder scored two goals in a 3-2 win over OKC Energy FC at Starfire Stadium. Mathers followed his brace with a goal and an assist in a 4-3 loss at Orange County SC on Saturday. Sounders FC 2 (6-7-2, 20 points) faces Whitecaps FC 2 in a Cascadia clash at MacLeod Athletic Park on Saturday, July 1 (3:00 p.m. PT / Live-streamed on SoundersFC.com).
Mathers, 23, is in his second season with Sounders FC after being selected in the Second Round of the 2016 MLS SuperDraft. He scored three goals in 24 appearances for S2 in 2016, before inking a First Team contract in March. The Duke product is tied for the team lead with five goals for S2 this season in nine USL appearances while on a standard loan to USL. He also started and played 72 minutes for the First Team in a 2-1 win over Portland in the Fourth Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup earlier this month.
Tuesday’s edition of the USL Team of the Week marks the fourth time this season an S2 player has been honored. Midfielder Ray Saari and forward Felix Chenkam each earned USL Team of the Week distinctions, while midfielder Irvin Parra was named USL Player of the Week in Week 11.
