Sounders FC Academy product Jordan Morris had a late goal controversially waived off and the U.S. Under-23 team struggled to overcome some costly and unexpected mistakes in a 2-0 loss to Honduras on CONCACAF Olympic qualifying on Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah.
The loss puts the Americans on the brink of elimination on the road to the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro next summer. They’ll face Canada in the third-place consolation game on Tuesday after the Canucks were dumped by Mexico in the other semifinal on Saturday. The winner of that game will then face Colombia in a CONCACAF-CONMEBOL play-in game in March for the right to play in Rio.
The U.S. is looking to qualify for the Olympics for the first time since Beijing in 2008.
Morris started and logged a full 90 minutes for the U.S., finishing with four of the team’s 10 shots during the match. He had an apparent goal waved off in the 83rd minute for offside, a frustrating and final blow toan American team that gave up goals in the 23rd and 77th minutes to Honduran forward Alberth Elis.
