Remarkable saves have become somewhat routine for Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei over the past 12 months, and he proved that yet again in a crucial home match against the rival Vancouver Whitecaps in September. With Seattle leading 1-0, former Sounder Fredy Montero stood over a free kick from distance.
Montero hit the ball well, deflected off Chad Marshall’s shoulder and was destined for the top corner in what would have been a spectacular equalizer. But there was Frei again, lunging to his left and parrying the ball off the crossbar with his famous left hand and keeping Montero and the Whitecaps off the scoresheet in what became a statement 3-0 win.
