The Seattle Sounders are in the middle of a club-record 13-match unbeaten run, due in large part to stalwart defending and excellent goalkeeping from Stefan Frei. In this edition of Quest Diagnostics Advanced Stats, we examine Frei’s fantastic season.
Frei has tied a career high and is tied for first in Major League Soccer with 10 shutouts this year. He has more clean sheets in his last nine matches (five) than he has goals allowed (four). He’s stopping shots at nearly a 70-percent clip and is third in the league in Goals Against Average for goalkeepers who have played at least 10 matches.
Frei solidified his status in Seattle lore with The Save in last year’s MLS Cup Final, but the fourth-year Sounder is once again anchoring a formidable back line that has been one of MLS’ best since July 4. Frei will aim for his 11th shutout when the Sounders visit Real Salt Lake on Saturday (6:30 p.m. PT; JOEtv, KIRO Radio 97.3 FM, El Rey 1360 AM).
