SEATTLE, WASH. – Seattle Sounders FC 2 today announced that it is has signed midfielder Charles Renken to its roster. Renken, 23, most recently played for USL's Saint Louis FC for the past two seasons, making 30 league appearances. He is eligible to play on Sunday afternoon against Sacramento Republic FC at Starfire Stadium (2:00 p.m. PT / Live-streamed on SoundersFC.com).
"Charles is a skilled player and we are excited to bring him in with the club," said Sounders FC Director of Player Personnel Kurt Schmid. "He brings a wealth of experience that improves the quality of S2's play, and hopefully we provide an opportunity for him to flourish within the organization."
A native of Zambia, Renken grew up in the suburbs of St. Louis before joining the U.S. Soccer U-17 Academy in Bradenton, Florida at the age of 13, where he was a heavily scouted prospect. In 2010, he joined the U-19 side for Germany’s TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, where he made 10 appearances. The following year, Renken inked a contract with the Portland Timbers and played in 10 reserve matches.
The midfielder went abroad once again in 2013, plying his trade for Sweden’s Gimo IF FK before returning stateside in 2014. He played for USL’s Arizona United in 2014 and Saint Louis FC from 2015-2016. Renken also represented the United States at the U-14, U-15, U-17 and U-20 levels from 2007-2011.
