In September, we kicked off our celebration of Latinx Heritage Month! We acknowledge the complexity of the terminology used to celebrate this month, and recognize the variety of ways that members of the community identify. At Sounders FC, we use the inclusive term Latinx in alignment with our firm belief in LGBTQ+ equality, and to recognize and celebrate the diversity of culture and heritage of the community represented by Sounders FC players, staff and fans.
INVESTING IN LATINX YOUTH
On September 17, RAVE Foundation opened two new mini-pitches at Barge-Lincoln Elementary School in Yakima, in partnership with longtime partners Club Santos Laguna and Orlegi Sports and in collaboration with the University of Washington, Yakima Public Schools and EarthGen! In Yakima County, where 50.2 percent of the population identifies as Hispanic or Latino – compared to 13.0 percent of Washington State’s total population – the new mini-pitches and gardens provide an important service for the community’s youth, with bright inviting play and learning spaces.
After the field opening celebration, we hosted a Matchday Viewing Party at Bale Breaker Brewing Company. In its second year, the event featured special giveaways, food trucks, happy hour with Brad Evans and trivia!
NATIONAL VOTER REGISTRATION DAY
We believe that every person, voting in every election, is necessary to create stronger and more equitable communities. To celebrate National Voter Registration Day on September 20, we collaborated with our fellow Seattle pro sports teams, and King County Elections, to emphasize the importance of making your voice heard.
