Seattle Sounders 0, San Jose Earthquakes 1: 'Quakes defeat Sounders in final preseason match in Tucson

The Seattle Sounders lost 1-0 to the San Jose Earthquakes on Tuesday in a preseason scrimmage in Tucson, Ariz., on a goal from Cordell Cato in the 59th minute.

Clint Dempsey started for the second consecutive match and played the entire first half after going for just 30 minutes in the Sounders’ 1-1 friendly draw with the Portland Timbers on Saturday. He exited after 45 minutes as head coach Brian Schmetzer continues to ease him back into full match fitness.

Roman Torres played for the first time this preseason, starting the match and exiting at halftime, while Joevin Jones and Harry Shipp, who each played against Portland, had the match off. Shipp is battling a knock on his ankle he sustained in the second half on Saturday.

Captain Osvaldo Alonso did not play for the second straight game as he continues to rest his knee.

The second half featured three Academy players and two Homegrown signings, as Sam Rogers, Jake Morris, Shandon Hopeau played with the first team along with recent signings Seyi Adekoya and Henry Wingo.

The Sounders will return to Seattle on Wednesday before traveling to Charleston, S.C., for the Carolina Challenge Cup from Feb. 18-25.
