The Seattle Sounders played to a scoreless draw with the San Jose Earthquakes at Earthquakes Stadium in San Jose, Calif., on Sunday.

After winning 7-1 against the ‘Quakes last month, Seattle and San Jose drew nil-nil for the second time this season after doing so during the group stage of the MLS is Back tournament this summer. It also extends the Sounders’ unbeaten streak against the Earthquakes to 12 matches (6-0-6). Seattle hasn’t lost to San Jose since 2015.

The best chance for either team came toward the end of the first half when a Chris Wondolowski header was cleared off the line by Will Bruin.

The Sounders improve to 31 points from 17 matches this season (9-4-4) and will host the rival Portland Timbers on Thursday, Oct. 22 (7:30 p.m. PT; FS1, 1090 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM).

THREE TAKEAWAYS

Still on top

Thanks to a stoppage-time equalizer for LAFC in Portland, the Sounders finish the weekend still in first place in the Western Conference. They are tied on points with the Timbers, but Seattle owns a better goal differential and has a match in hand. The Sounders’ 1.82 PPG is fourth-best in MLS.

Frei milestone

Goalkeeper Stefan Frei made his 250th Sounders appearance in all competitions. Frei is already the most-tenured Sounders goalkeeper in their MLS era and is top 10 all time in MLS in games played, minutes, wins, shutouts and saves.

Defensive lockdown

The Sounders earned their fifth shutout of the season and their first in their last six matches, despite only allowing seven goals in that span. Seattle still owns a Western-Conference leading defensive record, having only conceded 17 times in 17 matches.
