Seattle Sounders Head Coach Brian Schmetzer on Tuesday said that midfielder Cristian Roldan suffered a hip flexor strain against the Portland Timbers on Sunday at Providence Park in the first leg of the Western Conference Semifinals. Schmetzer called Roldan’s status a game-time decision for Leg 2 on Thursday at CenturyLink Field (7:30 p.m. PT; FS1, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM | TICKETS).
“We’ll see if that kid can make it, he’s a pretty strong mentally kid,” said Schmetzer of Roldan.
Roldan exited Leg 1 in the 31st minute for Waylon Francis. Roldan scored four goals and added a career-high nine assists in the regular season. He also became the first Sounders outfield player to start all 34 matches and play over 3,000 minutes in a single MLS season.
In addition to Roldan's injury update, Schmetzer also revealed that three-time MLS Defender of the Year Chad Marshall underwent meniscus surgery on Tuesday morning after landing awkwardly on his right leg Sunday afternoon in Portland.
