The North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) named Seattle Sounders forward Clint Dempsey the MLS Player of the Week for Week 24 on Tuesday. The NASR consists of journalists in print, television and online media and selects a Player of the Week for each week of the MLS regular season.
Dempsey scored twice in the Sounders’ 3-1 win over the Portland Timbers on Sunday. He converted a penalty kick in the 61st minute before netting the eventual game-winner in the 80th on a left-footed shot from the top of the box that found the bottom corner.
The goals were the seventh and eight of the season for Dempsey, who was also named to the MLS Team of the Week for Week 24 along with teammate Cristian Roldan. This is the first Player of the Week honor for Dempsey this year.
The Sounders return to action at the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston on Wednesday (6 p.m. PT; JOEtv, ROOT Sports, El Rey 1360AM, 770 KTTH) before traveling to Portland to take on the Timbers for the second time in as many weeks on Sunday. The Sounders now sit just two points outside of the sixth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
