On Friday morning, Seattle Sounders FC 2 Head Coach John Hutchinson announced that S2 forward Felix Chenkam has signed a First Team contract, pending paperwork. Chenkam, 19, has been a top contributor for the USL side since joining in March 2017.
“We're really excited, it's a good moment for us,” Hutchinson told media. “S2 is about building players for the First Team...To have Felix go to the First Team is exciting.”
Said Chenkam: “I was very pleased to hear the news, it was a total surprise to me, but I was very happy to be selected as a First Team player.”
Chenkam is tied for the team lead with four goals in nine appearances for S2 this season. He recorded five goals in 19 appearances in 2017. The Douala, Cameroon, native also played in three matches for his country's U-20 side in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
“He's good at hold-up play, he will connect players in the build up and he wants to score goals,” Hutchinson said. “He will add enthusiasm up top. He is young and hungry.”
Added Chenkam: “[First Team Head Coach Brian Schmetzer] told me it’s a very, very big opportunity, and that if I want to stay with the First Team, I need to keep working hard, score goals and contribute to the team.”
