Seattle Sounders FC 2 earns road draw at Saint Louis FC

Darwin Jones

FENTON, MO. - Sounders FC 2 (3-9-5, 14 points) earned a road point in its first-ever meeting with Saint Louis FC (6-6-5, 23 points) on Wednesday evening at World Wide Technology Park. Midfielder Emir Alihodzic netted the first professional goal of his career in the first half on a pass from Andy Craven, but the host club scored a late equalizer. Next up, S2 returns to Starfire Stadium for a fixture versus Arizona United SC on Sunday, July 10 (5:00 p.m. PT / Live-streamed on SoundersFC.com).

Just 12 minutes into the match, Alihodzic, who attend high school locally at St. Louis' Mehlville High, put S2 up 1-0. On the attack, Craven looped the ball over the head of the onrushing goalkeeper into the center of Saint Louis FC's area, where Alihodzic sent a drifting header into the far left corner of the open net.

S2 nearly doubled the lead before halftime, but midfielder Willy Kapawa's shot just missed the upper right corner after being set-up well by Darwin Jones, while Jones' shot attempt a few minutes later caromed off the left post.

The host side didn't tally an attempt on goal until the 65th minute. Moments later, Seattle goalkeeper Charlie Lyon made a diving stop, but the ball deflected toward Jeremie Lynch in front of the open goal. Four S2 players quickly retreated to the line as the dangerous opportunity sailed wide off Lynch's foot.

Just minutes away from Lyon's first shutout of the 2016 USL campaign, St. Louis FC equalized off a throw-in. From the right flank, AJ Cochran's glancing header was flicked into the center of Seattle's area, where Sam Fink directed a header into the net from close range in the 87th minute.

With the one-point result, S2 remains unbeaten when holding the halftime lead (1-0-4). S2 takes on Arizona United SC on Sunday, July 10 for an evening contest at Starfire Stadium (5:00 p.m. PT / Live-streamed on SoundersFC.com).
