Seattle Sounders defender Chad Marshall underwent meniscus surgery on Tuesday morning, according to Head Coach Brian Schmetzer.
"Marshall is having surgery this morning for a meniscus injury and I will give you further updates once the surgery is successful and he’s back on his feet," Schmetzer told media following Tuesday's training session at Starfire Sports.
The 2018 Defender of the Year finalist exited Sunday's opening match in the Western Conference Semifinals against the Portland Timbers in the 40th minute after landing awkwardly following a pass in the Sounders defensive half of the field.
Marshall, 34, had another impressive year with the Sounders, tallying four goals in 30 MLS appearances and helping the team allow just 34 goals (second-fewest in MLS). The league's only three-time MLS Defender of the Year became the second field player in MLS history to appear in 400 career matches.
