Ahead of the club’s 2020 MLS home opener on Sunday, MLSsoccer.com has ranked the Seattle Sounders as the No. 1 team in the league in the first edition of its weekly Power Rankings.
The Sounders finished the 2019 season as MLS Cup champions, defeating Toronto FC 3-1 in the final at CenturyLink Field on November 10. Sunday’s clash with the Chicago Fire (12:00 p.m. PT; ESPN, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM | TICKETS) marks the club’s first official league match since winning the title, and there will be ample opportunities to celebrate those special moments from last season as the champs return for the new campaign.
“The Sounders return much of their MLS Cup-winning starting XI from a season ago, and they've added Brazilian midfielder João Paulo and Colombian center back Yeimar Gómez Andrade to the mix,” wrote MLSsoccer.com contributor Jonathan Sigal. “Until proven otherwise, they're the crème de la crème of the MLS hierarchy for 2020.”
