Nicolas Lodeiro’s pursuit of Luis Suarez continues.
The Seattle Sounders Designated Player has made his desires known to bring Barcelona forward, Uruguay countryman and close friend Luis Suarez to the Pacific Northwest. Lodeiro has said previously that Suarez is “only a phone call away” from joining the Sounders in MLS and that he is “already a fan of Seattle.
While with the Uruguay national team for CONMEBOL 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, Lodeiro presented Suarez with a Seattle Sounders jersey and said, “The next member of the Seattle Sounders? HE’S COMING.”
Suarez, 30, is one of the world’s most prolific strikers. He’s amassed over 260 goals in his illustrious club career, including a career-high 40 for Barça two seasons ago. Suarez and Lodeiro were also teammates with Dutch powerhouse Ajax from 2009-11, and prior to last year’s MLS Cup Final, Suarez wished good luck to Lodeiro and former Sounder and fellow Uruguayan Alvaro Fernandez.
During a World Cup Qualifier against Venezuela last October, Suarez assisted Lodeiro on a diving header that put La Celeste in front.
Suarez also played a small role in helping the Sounders land Lodeiro from Boca Juniors in 2016. Lodeiro was frustrated with his own English while trying to communicate with Sounders General Manager & President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey, so Lodeiro handed the phone to Suarez, who translated.
“He told me maybe he comes in seven years,” Lagerwey said with a laugh. “That was his quote, so maybe that’s when his contract runs out...I told him we’d love to have him whenever he’s ready.”
