Major League Soccer on Thursday named Sounders FC captain Nicolás Lodeiro and center back Yeimar to the Week 16 Team of the Week following their dominant performances in Seattle’s 2-1 win over Real Salt Lake.
With several players absent due to international duty and injury, Lodeiro supplied a midfield masterclass, propelling the Sounders to three points against an RSL side resolute on bunkering deep and hoping for a point. In addition to his two assists, Lodeiro registered four key passes and covered ground all over the pitch.
After missing the first couple of matches of the 2020 regular season, Lodeiro now sits third in MLS with eight assists, one ahead of teammate Jordan Morris.
Yeimar marshalled a back line that restricted RSL’s attack to just seven shots all match, none of which were on target. In the second half, he demonstrated his aerial prowess on both sides of the ball, hammering home Lodeiro’s free to kick to put the Sounders 2-0. It was Yeimar’s second goal against RSL in as many games.
The Sounders return to action on Sunday as they visit LAFC at Banc of California Stadium (4:00 p.m. PT; ESPN, 950 KJR, El Rey 1360 AM).
