The schedule states that the Seattle Sounders fell to FC Dallas 3-0 in March, but it’s hardly the same Seattle side that will take the pitch against the Hoops on Sunday.
At the end of a week-long trip that included a midweek loss to Chivas in Guadalajara, Mexico, a battered and bruised Sounders side limped into a difficult defeat to FC Dallas on March 18. Now the Sounders, unbeaten in seven straight matches, take on first-place FC Dallas on Sunday evening at CenturyLink Field ( (7 p.m. PT; FS1, YouTube TV, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM | TICKETS).
Four months ago, Clint Dempsey recorded a red card in the 37th minute, leaving the Sounders with just 10 men for the final hour of the match. In the second half, the hosts scored in the 58th and 63rd minute, adding on to a first-half goal for the 3-0 scoreline.
““It was early in the season, there was Champions League, we had an unfortunate red card – there were a lot of reasons for the outcome of that game,” Head Coach Brian Schmetzer told media Friday morning.
While the back line of Kelvin Leerdam, Román Torres, Chad Marshall and Nouhou remains pretty consistent – Kim Kee-hee made his MLS debut in a reserve role during this match – the offensive attack is drastically different.
Magnus Wolff Eikrem (no longer with the club) and Handwalla Bwana (injury) both started that match and will not factor this weekend. After Dempsey’s ejection, Lamar Neagle subbed on for Harry Shipp and played as the standalone striker. The Sounders were unable to find an offensive spark.
Will Bruin, Nicolás Lodeiro and Osvaldo Alonso all missed the match in March due to injuries, and each one is expected to play big roles on Sunday. Even Víctor Rodríguez, who has struggled with knee injuries this season, practiced in full Friday and could be an option against FC Dallas.
Factor in the dynamic influence of forward Raúl Ruidíaz, who has one goal and one assist and is 4-0-0 as a Sounder, and it’s a completely different look in the attack from a few months ago.
Also of note, Brad Smith could be eligible for Sunday depending on finalized paperwork.
Add it all together, and it's a much different outfit from the one that came up short against FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium in North Texas.
“We want the three points against Dallas,” Alonso said. “We need to play our game to find a way to get three points.”
