Stefan Frei has made so many jaw-dropping, physics-defying saves in the past 12 months that it’s easy to overlook just how impressive they are.
There was the diving stop against Houston last October, the one-handed save on Jozy Altidore in May and of course The Save on Altidore in last year’s MLS Cup. Last Wednesday, Frei added another to his ever-growing compilation.
Leading 1-0 against the Vancouver Whitecaps in a crucial Cascadia and Western Conference clash, former Sounders forward Fredy Montero stood over a free kick and fired a shot destined for goal. It took a slight deflection off Chad Marshall before Frei, lunging hard to his left, parried the ball off the crossbar and kept it out en route to being named a Week 30 MLS Save of the Week nominee.
The Sounders went on to win 3-0 and earned a massive three points in the home stretch of the season. Frei’s effort also earned the No. 1 spot on SportsCenter’s “Top 10 Plays.”
