We’re going back to where it all began.
Presented by WaFd Bank, the ‘Vintage Week’ edition of Sounders FC Classics, a new series in which we re-air some of the best matches in Sounders history, the club will showing the inaugural match from March 19, 2009. Earning 39 percent of the vote, Seattle’s debut in Major League Soccer just edged Kasey Keller’s final regular-season home match in 2011.
On May 2, we’ll be re-airing the match that started it all. As the fresh new upstarts in MLS, supported from the opening whistle with unprecedented crowds, the Sounders entered the league with plenty of expectations.
The Rave Green surpassed those expectations from the opening whistle, as they played free flowing, attacking soccer that resulted in a 3-0 win over the New York Red Bulls. It was a result and performance that propelled the trajectory of soccer in this country.
Like all previous editions of Sounders FC Classics, the match will be televised on JOEtv, SoundersFC.com and the Sounders FC App. There will also be a pre-match show, live-streamed on Twitter and hosted by brand ambassador Brad Evans, with numerous special guests commentating on the match.
