The boys are back with a new episode of Winging it with Zak and Brad!
Club legends Steve Zakuani and Brad Evans are joined on the pod by former Sounders Nata Jaqua and Fredy Montero.
Ahead of this week’s edition of Sounders FC Classics– the club will be re-airing the inaugural MLS match from 2009 – Zakuani and Evans chatted with Jaqua and Montero, both of whom were instrumental in making the Sounders an instant success in Major League Soccer.
Jaqua spent three seasons with the Rave Green, notching an impressive nine goals and seven assists during the club’s first season back in 2009. A towering, technical striker, he also won Player of the Tournament as Seattle hoisted the U.S. Open Cup in 2010. Since retiring from professional soccer, he’s taken on a new daunting challenge: running marathons.
Montero, who currently plays for the Vancouver Whitecaps, is a fan favorite for his prolific spell with Seattle, when he notched 47 goals and 34 assists across 119 regular season appearances. After catching up with his former teammates, Montero discusses his time with the Sounders, career in Europe and his coffee shop he owns in Seattle.
“I like the idea of playing international soccer,” said Montero, recalling when he first heard from his agent than MLS team wanted to sign him. “I didn’t know exactly what city the team was from, but it was exciting for me. It was a huge opportunity to help my family, my future and my career. And I knew it was time to make that decision.”
