Major League Soccer has nominated Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei for the 2017 Allstate Goalkeeper of the Year. Frei led MLS with 13 clean sheets, three more than anyone else. He finished second in Goals Against Average for goalkeepers who played at least 15 matches and saved 69.4 percent of shots faced.

With a 2-0 lead in the 57th minute at Minnesota United on Aug. 5, Frei helped keep the Loons off the scoresheet with an acrobatic save on Sam Nicholson from distance. Nicholson dribbled into space from the left flank and unleashed a menacing shot from 30 yards out that forced Frei to lunge to the far post and punch away. Frei earned another clean sheet as the Sounders would go on to win 4-0.
