Brian Schmetzer confirms Handwalla Bwana suffered midfoot sprain, no timetable yet for return

Seattle Sounders Head Coach Brian Schmetzer confirmed midfielder Handwalla Bwana has suffered a midfoot sprain.

Bwana exited with an injury in the 33rd minute in the Sounders’ 1-0 loss to Real Salt Lake last weekend, the latest of several unfortunate injuries Seattle has faced already in 2018. The 20-year-old rookie out of the University of Washington has fared well as a professional so far, starting five times in eight appearances and scoring his first MLS goal against Toronto FC earlier this month.

“He’s going to be in a boot,” Schmetzer told KJR radio host Dave “Softy” Mahler on Tuesday evening. “It’s another one of those funky injuries that seems to be plaguing us all year.”

As for how long Bwana would be sidelined, Schmetzer replied, “I can’t say because I just don’t know.”

There is good news for the Sounders, though, as forward Will Bruin and midfield Víctor Rodríguez should be available for this Saturday’s match at Real Salt Lake (6:30 p.m. PT; JOEtv, YouTube TV, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM).
