SEATTLE, WASH. – Tacoma Defiance today announced that it has released midfielder Jesse Daley. The Australian made 50 appearances over three seasons for Defiance after signing in May of 2018, recording five goals for Sounders FC’s USL side.
“Three years ago this club welcomed a boy from Australia with open arms. Today as I say my goodbyes, I am so grateful for the opportunity that was given to me,” said Daley. “The hardest part about closing this chapter in my life is leaving behind so many people that I love and respect. I’ve been so lucky to live out my dream here in Seattle for the past three years. I’ve had the privilege to play with some incredible players, but more importantly work with the most incredible people. I’ve made friends for life and that’s what I take the most pride in. Every time I stepped onto the field I gave everything I had for this club. To everyone who has been there for the ride, thank you. It’s been real, Seattle.”
Daley signed with Tacoma alongside fellow countryman Antonee Burke-Gilroy on May 1, 2018 and instantly became a stalwart in the lineup, starting 19 of 22 appearances in 2018 with two goals. He then started 20 of his 24 appearances in 2019, also scoring two goals, before starting all four of his appearances in 2020.
"We’d like to thank Jesse for his time and commitment with the club over these past three seasons. He was a cultural architect within our developmental project and consistently provided mentorship and leadership to our young players transitioning into their pro careers,” said Sounders FC Director of Player Development Henry Brauner. “Jesse provided many things that will never show up on a stat sheet or box score, but without his involvement and direct interaction with our highest potential young pros, they wouldn't be in the position they are today."
Additionally, the USL Championship today announced that Tacoma’s previously scheduled match at Real Monarchs SLC has been rescheduled for September 4, with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. PT at Zions Bank Stadium.
Defiance is 2-1-1 since returning to USL action on July 13. Saturday's 2-1 loss at Reno snapped a three-match unbeaten run, as well as a two-match winning streak after a pair of shutout wins over Portland. Sitting third in the club's newly-established four-team group following the resumption of play due to the COVID-19 shutdown, Defiance's next scheduled match is Saturday, August 15 at Sacramento Republic FC (8:00 p.m. PT / ESPN+).
