World Cup Qualifying

USMNT routs St. Vincent and the Grenadines to inch closer to Hexagonal

The United States national team defeated St. Vincent and the Grenadines 6-0 on Friday in a 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying match in the St. Vincent capital of Kingstown.

Bobby Wood opened the scoring in the 28th minute on a nice buildup from captain Jozy Altidore and Fabian Johnson. Matt Besler then scored his first international goal four minutes later before Altidore scored on a penalty kick in the 43rd minute after Wood was fouled in the box.

After the halftime break, St. Vincent had two goals called back for offside, the first coming from Seattle Sounders FC 2 forward Myron Samuel on a scrum in the box and the second from Sounders forward Oalex Anderson on a one-timed volley off a great cross. Samuel and Anderson each started and went the full 90.

Christian Pulisic and Sacha Kljestan entered for the U.S. in the 66th minute and had an immediate impact. Kljestan picked out Pulisic on a brilliant through ball, which the 17-year-old calmly controlled and slotted home for the fourth goal in the 71st. Seven minutes later, Pulisic returned the favor by finding Kljestan in front of goal for an easy tap-in and his first international goal since 2010. Pulisic earned a brace in the 92nd minute on a seeing-eye strike from the top of the box.

Sounders forward Jordan Morris entered in the 74th minute for Altidore and logged 16 minutes for the USMNT. Former Sounders defender DeAndre Yedlin started and logged all 90 minutes on the back line in the win.

The United States improved to 10 points in CONCACAF Group C qualifying and can clinch their spot in the Hexagonal with a Trinidad and Tobago win over Guatemala later Friday.
