The stage is set.
The United States Men's National Team learned its group opponents at the 2022 FIFA World Cup following the official draw in Qatar on Friday. After booking a spot for the event as the third-place finisher in the Concacaf octagonal qualifying round, the Stars & Stripes were placed into Group B alongside England, Iran and the winner of the European Playoff. The winner of Wales vs. Scotland/Ukraine will take the fourth and final spot in Group B.
The 2022 World Cup will mark the first time the USMNT have participated in the biggest event in global soccer in eight years after missing out on qualification for the 2018 tournament in Russia.
Group B features several exciting matchups with historical World Cup ties for the USMNT. The Stars & Stripes squared off with England during the group stage at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, earning a 1-1 draw on the back of a Clint Dempsey equalizer from distance, which helped book passage to the knockout rounds. At the 1998 World Cup in France, the United States fell 2-1 to Iran as they finished fourth and failed to advance from the group stage.
The United States will open against the winner of the European playoff on November 21 before taking on England on November 25 and Iran on November 29.
Seattle Sounders players Jordan Morris and Cristian Roldan have been consistent call-ups for the United States throughout the qualification process. The 2022 World Cup, which will occur during the winter for the first time in the history of the competition, is set to begin on November 21 and will run through December 18.
The Seattle Sounders return to action on Saturday as they visit Western Conference opponent Minnesota United (5:00 p.m. PT; FOX 13, Univision Seattle, Prime Video, iHeart Radio, El Rey 1360AM) at Allianz Field.
