Seattle Sounders players Jordan Morris, Cristian Roldan and the United States men’s national team picked up their second straight win of the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup, defeating Joevin Jones and Trinidad and Tobago 6-0 at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio, on Saturday.
The USMNT dominated possession from the opening whistle but didn’t breach T&T’s goal until the 41st minute. After a failed clearance from a corner kick, Chelsea FC winger Cristian Pulisic lofted a cross to the back post that Aaron Long duly headed home.
Trinidad nearly equalized on two occasions early in the second half, only for Zack Steffen to deny them with a pair of saves. Morris entered the match as a substitute for Tyler Boyd in the 61st minute and the floodgates opened shortly thereafter.
The Stars & Stripes got a crucial second goal in the 66th minute, courtesy of a Gyasi Zardes tap-in.
Pulisic set up Zardes for a third three minutes later before Morris registered the first of his two assists in the 73rd minute, setting up Pulisic for an easy finish. The Sounders Homegrown grabbed his second assist in the 78th minute, sliding the ball across goal for Paul Arriola to smash home at the back post. Long completed his brace off a rebound in the 90th minute.
Jones came off the bench for Trinidad in the 67th minute, once again occupying an advanced midfield role. Roldan made the matchday roster but did not feature in the game.
The USMNT will wrap up the group stage on June 26 against Román Torres and Panama (6 p.m. PT; FS1), while Jones and Trinidad will take on Guyana (3:30 p.m. PT; FS1).
