Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei continues to write his name in the all-time Major League Soccer record books, and such a long and illustrious career will do that. But it’s the Swiss-American’s penchant for the clutch save during a match’s fever pitch that he’ll likely always be remembered. His denial of Jozy Altidore in the 2016 MLS Cup Final that earned him MLS Cup MVP and Seattle’s first MLS Cup title is forever proof of that.
Frei put that acumen on display in a home match against Western Conference rivals LAFC when he made a double save in rapid succession. With the Sounders leading 1-0 in the 63rd minute, Frei got down quickly to parry away a shot from Ryan Hollingshead from six yards out. The Sounders goalkeeper then reacted immediately to get up and dive to his right to stop another point-blank shot on the rebound from Cristian Arango.
Frei continues to boast the pedigree and athleticism to step up when the Sounders need him, and it’s no wonder why this double save isn’t the last one on this list.
