The Seattle Sounders are hosting the New York Red Bulls (7:30 p.m. PT; MLS Season Pass on Apple TV, 93.3 KJR FM, El Rey 1360AM | TICKETS) at Lumen Field on Saturday. Here are three matchups to watch:
Fredy Montero vs Andrés Reyes
Fredy Montero is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to playing against the Red Bulls. In the Sounders 2009 inaugural MLS match against the New York squad, he tallied a brace and an assist for his team, pushing the Rave Green to a 3-0 victory. Montero’s impact remains 12 years later, as he continues to be a main contributor in the Rave Green attack. He’ll be facing Andrés Reyes on Saturday, a dynamic player in the back who is recognized as one of the top defenders in MLS; he currently ranks No. 1 in interceptions in the league so far this season.
Yeimar vs Cory Burke
Yeimar serves as one of the backbones of the Sounders defense. As a consistent starter in the center back position, he has become a main component in preventing goal scoring opportunities for Rave Green opposition. His main competitor will be forward Cory Burke, who has been utilized as one of the points of attack for the Red Bulls in 2023. So far this season, he’s tallied two goals for the New York team.
João Paulo vs Omir Fernandez
João Paulo remains as one of the Sounders’ vital assets in the center of the pitch. His movement on and off the ball allows his teammates to build in the attack while his defensive efforts prevent his opposition from doing so. He’ll be going up against Red Bulls midfielder Omir Fernandez. Of the Red Bulls three wins this season, Fernandez has solidified two of those victories, being the lone goal scorer in the team’s 1-0 results against D.C. United and New York City FC.
