The Seattle Sounders are taking on Charlotte FC at Bank of America Stadium on Saturday (4:30 p.m. PT; Watch on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360AM) in their first and only meeting of the season. Here are three matchups to watch:
Yeimar vs Karol Åšwiderski
Yeimar has been a key asset in shutting down opposition for the Sounders throughout the 2023 season. His consistency in the backline was demonstrated this past Saturday as he supported the Sounders to their ninth shutout this year. He will be going up against forward Karol Åšwiderski, Charlotte’s leading goal scorer with five goals so far this season. The International, Designated player also participated in the FIFA Men’s World Cup in 2022 for the Poland National Team.Â
Raúl RuidÃaz vs Bill TuilomaÂ
RuidÃaz has been one of the most lethal scorers in MLS Â since joining the Sounders in 2018. He has accumulated two goals so far this season and is itching to get back on the scoresheet after missing a number of games due to injury. RuidÃaz will be going head-to-head with center back Bill Tuiloma, a MLS veteran and former Timbers player. Tuiloma is known for being a versatile defender with his ability to play across multiple positions all while being comfortable distributing with both feet, depending on the situation at hand.Â
João Paulo vs Ashley Westwood
After coming off his one-game suspension, João Paulo put on a defensive masterclass in the center of the pitch in the Sounders’ last match against the Timbers. By shutting down players early, the Brazilian midfielder was able to prevent multiple attacking build-up opportunities for the Timbers. He will likely face up against Charlotte midfielder Ashley Westwood, who spent most of his career playing in the English Premier League with teams Aston Villa (2012-2017) and Burnley (2017-2023). Westwood is known as a major contributor in setting the tone and tempo for the Charlotte squad through his decision making on and off the ball.
