Sounders FC meets the Colorado Rapids for the third and final time this season on Sunday at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Here are three key matchups as Seattle looks to complete the sweep of the season series.
Obafemi Martins vs. Joe Nasco
The MLS Player of the Month for September, Martins is looking to continue his hot streak in the final month of the season. With five goals and one assist last month, he helped Seattle to a 3-2-0 record while maintaining the top spot in the Supporters’ Shield standings. He returns to the site of his first goal for Sounders FC back in April of 2013 and will likely square off with Joe Nasco. The Colorado goalkeeper has started four of the last five matches, starting with an August match against Seattle when he allowed one goal in a strong performance and has seen mixed results since. In his three complete matches – he was red-carded in the opening minute of his other start – he has made 13 saves while allowing seven goals.
Lamar Neagle vs. Chris Klute
Like Martins, Neagle caught fire in September, tallying three goals and three assists while registering a point in five straight matches. He scored in the first meeting of the season between the two teams and now has matched his career high with eight goals and doubled his previous best with eight assists. On the other side, Klute has been a great addition at right back over the last two seasons. Like Neagle did with the Charleston Battery in 2010, Klute was a standout at the lower divisions with the Atlanta Silverbacks in 2012.
DeAndre Yedlin vs. Deshorn Brown
Each time Seattle and Colorado have met over the last two seasons, it has provided a good showcase for two of the best young players in MLS in Yedlin and Brown. They both boast plenty of speed, making it an explosive contest between the two.
