What a run it’s been for Gustav Svensson.
Sweden on Tuesday named the Seattle Sounders midfielder to its World Cup roster ahead of this summer’s tournament in Russia. Manager Janne Andersson only named his 23-man squad, as opposed to a larger provisional roster he could have until June 4.
Svensson, 31, arrived in Seattle before the 2017 season and hadn’t been on the national team’s radar in over a year. After a successful first season with the Sounders, Svensson made four appearances for the Blågult during World Cup qualifying and added another cap in a friendly against Chile in March.
Román Torres was named to Panama’s World Cup preliminary roster on Monday.
