Ahead of the 2019 MLS Cup, Sounders FC broadcaster and former winger Steve Zakuani penned a feature for MLSsoccer.com on Head Coach Brian Schmetzer.
Zakuani, a high-flying winger in Rave Green whose career was cut short by a serious leg injury suffered in 2011, waxed lyrical about Schmetzer’s innate ability to connect with his players.
“He’s so loved by the players precisely because he’s so unassuming and just one of the guys,” wrote Zakuani. “Don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen him put his foot down when the situation warrants it. But in general, he leads through positive reinforcement and being approachable.”
Zakuani also detailed Schmetzer’s tactical acumen, pointing out that the Sounders boss often doesn’t get the recognition or praise that his resumé warrants.
“Outside of Seattle, Schmetzer doesn’t get the respect he deserves as a tactician,” he wrote. “I think some people believe that it’s working out well for him because he’s a Seattle guy and that he couldn’t replicate his success in another city.
“I disagree. Schmetzer has his philosophy, but he’s also flexible and has an ability to understand the exact tactics his team will need to employ to win any given game.”
