Sounders rally again and grab late equalizer in Vancouver to split points

Obafemi Martins

VANCOUVER, B.C. - Gonzalo Pineda scored a late penalty kick as Seattle Sounders FC (8-3-2, 26 points) tied Vancouver Whitecaps FC (4-2-5, 17 points), 2-2, at BC Place in Vancouver, B.C. on Saturday.

Seattle remains in first place in the Supporter's Shield race and advances to 0-0-2 in Cascadia Cup matches this season.

The equalizer came in the 82nd minute when Pineda chipped goalkeeper David Ousted on a penalty kick. Seattle's Cam Weaver drew the penalty after being fouled by Jay DeMerit in an attempt to jump for the ball. It was Pineda's first MLS goal.

Seattle struck first in the 36th minute on a goal by Chad Barrett. Barrett received a cross in the middle of the box from Kenny Cooper and directed a snap header to the left side of the net. It was Barrett's second goal of the season.

In the 39th minute Vancouver tied the game at 1-1. On a counter attack, Pedro Morales found Erik Hurtado on the right flank, who then crossed inside and cut back outside to finish with a strike to the far post.

Vancouver took 2-1 lead in the 66th minute when Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei came out of the box to clear a ball. Vancouver's Gershon Koffie received the ball, took a bounce, and sent the ball from long range into the open net.

Seattle nearly took the lead in the 84th minute when Obafemi Martins' shot struck the post. In extra time, Frei made two key stops on attempts by Koffie.

Vancouver had 24 shot attempts (6 on target), while Seattle had 8 shot attempts (2 on target). Seattle overcame an early attack from Vancouver, in which the Whitecaps had 8 shots in the opening 10 minutes.
