Gonzalo Pineda’s second-half strike against the Vancouver Whitecaps last weekend has won the AT&T MLS Goal of the Week in runaway fashion.
Pineda's goal - which he called one of the best goals of his career after the Sounders' 3-0 win over the 'Caps - earned 43 percent of the vote, easily topping runner-up Mike Grella of the New York Red Bulls and three other nominees. It’s the first career Goal of the Week honor for the Mexican midfielder and the Sounders’ seventh Goal of the Week honor this year, the most of any team in the league.
From just inside the penalty box, Pineda curled a left-footed shot off the post and into the net to give the Sounders a 2-0 lead over the Whitecaps at BC Place. It was a stellar team buildup from the Rave Green, as Nelson Valdez and Clint Dempsey were both involved on the play. Pineda’s goal helped guide Seattle to three crucial road points and the 2015 Cascadia Cup.
