TUCSON, ARIZ. - Darwin Jones scored his second goal of the preseason Saturday evening in a 2-1 Sounders FC loss to the Portland Timbers at Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Arizona. In the second match of the 2016 preseason presented by adidas, Jones put the Rave Green up first but were unable to overcome a late second-half brace from Timbers forward Jack McInerney as Seattle fell to its Cascadia rivals.
The Rave Green began the scoring in the 53rd minute when Jones received a ball on the left flank, made a swift cut into the area and tucked a shot that struck the inside of the near post before going into the net. The second-year Homegrown Player leads the club with two goals in the preseason after finding the back of the net against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Wednesday.
Portland equalized in the 66th minute on the first of two goals from McInerney. Defender Andy Thoma sent a long cross in front of the goal, where McInerney connected on his first touch and directed the ball into the far side netting. The defending MLS champions added the winner in the 84th minute when Austin Peay delivered a low cross into the box from the right flank that found a streaking McInerney, who stabbed the ball past Tyler Miller to complete the brace.
Sounders FC once again came out in a 4-3-3 formation, with Aaron Kovar placed alongside Designated Players Obafemi Martins and Nelson Valdez to head the attack above midfielders Cristian Roldan, Erik Friberg and trialist Nathan Sturgis. Kovar and defender Chad Marshall each had quality chances, but the two sides remained scoreless through the opening 45 minutes. The Rave Green came out with an entirely separate lineup for the second half.
The 2016 Sounders FC preseason presented by adidas continues with the club's third and final Desert Friendly on Tuesday, February 9 against Mexican side Celaya FC before returning to Seattle on February 10.
