SEATTLE, WASH. – Seattle Sounders FC today announced that it is exercising the 2023 contract option of Sam Adeniran following the conclusion his loan with San Antonio FC, where the club captured the 2023 USL Championship title. Adeniran led SAFC with 12 goals in 24 appearances (including postseason), most recently scoring the game-winning strike in Sunday’s 3-1 win over Louisville City in the USL Championship Final. Additionally, Sounders FC has declined the contract option of Fredy Montero, but the veteran remains in active discussions with the club. Following the roster decisions announced last month and the signing of midfielder Sota Kitahara, Seattle’s roster now sits at 25 contracted players heading into next season.
After appearing in two matches for Sounders FC this year, as well as eight for Tacoma Defiance, scoring two goals, Adeniran went on loan to USL Championship side San Antonio FC. The Houston native went on to appear in 22 regular season matches and lead the team with 11 goals, in addition to one goal in two postseason appearances. Adeniran returns to Seattle following the conclusion of SAFC’s season.
Sounders FC finished the 2022 campaign with a 16-17-5 record across all competitions. The Rave Green became the first MLS side to win the Concacaf Champions League title in the spring, before a regular season that fell short of the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time in the club’s 14-year history. Seattle heads into the offseason with its sights set on the 2023 campaign, which begins with the FIFA Club World Cup.
