This Saturday, as Sounders FC takes on Vancouver Whitecaps FC in Seattle’s second Cascadia Cup match of the season (1:00 p.m. PT / JOEtv, YouTube TV, Univision-Seattle, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM), the team brings back a popular game theme from last season with the Heritage Match, celebrating the history of the club’s NASL roots.
In addition to adopting the Sounders’ original colors and logos throughout the stadium, the club’s pre-match festivities and opening ceremony will also have a throwback flair, and the team is set to wear its Heritage kits.
The gameday experience begins at the March to the Match in Occidental Park, where Seattle-based band Dude York is scheduled to perform from 11:00-11:40 a.m. PT, followed by a performance by Sound Wave before the March to the Match departs for the stadium at 12:00 p.m. PT.
Gates open at 11:30 a.m. PT and the first 10,000 fans receive a Sounders FC Heritage snapback hat, courtesy of Washington Federal. Fans should also plan to visit Washington Federal in Soccer Celebration, where they can vote for their favorite Stefan Frei-designed debit card and be entered to win a VIP meet-and-greet with Frei and an autographed print of the winning artwork.
The Xbox Pitch takes on a new look for team opening ceremonies, including throwback flags, stadium wraps and video board designs. NASL Sounder and Washington State soccer legend Jimmy Gabriel is set to lead the crowd in the call for “Scarves Up!” prior to kickoff.
Saturday’s match is just the second in 2018 Cascadia Cup competition, with Seattle’s game against the Portland Timbers on June 30 kicking off the annual three-team rivalry. The Timbers’ 3-2 victory over Sounders FC last month has them currently leading with three points, with this weekend’s game a chance for Seattle or Vancouver to match.
Fans should keep in mind that the Seattle Mariners are scheduled for a 7:10 p.m. PT first pitch against the Chicago White Sox on Saturday evening that may affect late afternoon traffic in the SoDo area.
