Sounders FC captain Nicolás Lodeiro is here to stay.
During the end-of-season media availability on Wednesday, Sounders FC General Manager & President of Soccer Garth Lagerway announced that Lodeiro has signed a contract extension with the Rave Green, keeping the Uruguayan midfield maestro in the Pacific Northwest through 2023.
“We wanted to avoid a situation where we were entering the last year of that contract,” said Lagerwey. “We’re very excited to have him back.”
Lodeiro, who guided the Sounders to a fourth appearance in MLS Cup in five years this season, has quickly inserted himself into the conversation regarding best-ever Sounders. Since joining Seattle in 2016, Lodeiro has amassed a combined 91 goals and assists from 121 MLS regular season matches, in addition to his eight goals and 10 assists in 21 games in the postseason.
Following the 2020 campaign, Lodeiro had one season remaining on his contract. According to Lagerwey, it was important to keep such an impactful player, who also possesses a critical role in the locker room, in Seattle for the long term.
“Obviously, he’s been the cornerstone of our franchise since 2016,” said Lagerwey. “Everything’s been built around him. I thought he had another fantastic season, so we’re super excited and grateful to have Nico back for three more years.”
Earlier this week, the club announced its roster decisions ahead of the offseason. You can find more information regarding the current status of players HERE.
