Renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly will create a unique piece of artwork that will be presented to the Sounders FC's friendly opponents.
RENTON, Wash. – The Seattle Sounders FC and renowned artist Dale Chihuly have entered a five-year partnership to create a unique piece of commemorative artwork that will be presented to the club’s friendly opponents, beginning with Chelsea FC on July 18, the team announced this afternoon.
“The opportunity to partner with Dale Chihuly, a world-renowned artist, to develop a signature piece of art as a gift for international teams needed no discussion,” said Sounders FC owner and general manager Adrian Hanauer. “We look forward to a long and vibrant partnership.”
Chihuly has created the striking Emerald Spire, based on Chihuly’s Venetian series of hand-blown glass. The mirrored surface of the Venetian reflects the excellence of each team that will be hosted by the Sounders and Seattle. The artwork which boasts an emerald feather stands approximately 20” high and measures 5” in width at its base.
“It was a lot of fun to design and make the commemorative artwork for the Sounders FC and the visiting international teams,” said Chihuly. “I am great fan of the organization and it’s a thrill to partner with them on this exciting venture.”
Sounders FC will host Chelsea FC and FC Barcelona as its two international friendlies at Qwest Field this season. The FC Barcelona match is set for August 5.
