Sounders FC acquires midfielder Calum Mallace from Montreal Impact

Mallace

SEATTLE, WASH. – Sounders FC today announced that it has acquired midfielder Calum Mallace from the Montreal Impact in exchange for a 2019 Fourth Round MLS SuperDraft selection. Mallace brings over five years of MLS experience to the Rave Green, making 80 career appearances since being drafted by Montreal in the Second Round of the 2012 MLS SuperDraft.

“We are pleased to have secured Calum’s services, as he’s a prime-age player with veteran experience in our league,” said Sounders FC General Manager & President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey. “Like the addition of Lamar Neagle earlier this week, Calum gives our coaching staff another experienced option for the most critical portion of our season. We’re excited to welcome him to Seattle.”

Following a collegiate career at Marquette, the Impact made Mallace the first selection (20th overall) in the Second Round of the 2012 MLS SuperDraft. The Scottish midfielder has started 51 of his 80 career MLS appearances, recording one goal and six assists in 4,415 of regular-season action. He also has six career appearances in the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, including 162 minutes played across three games (one start) in 2015.

“We’re familiar with Calum’s body of work in MLS and know that he’s a hardworking and talented player,” said Sounders FC Head Coach Brian Schmetzer. “I look forward to having him join our squad and begin meeting his new teammates. We think he’ll be a fine addition to this roster as we approach the most important part of our season.”

Collegiately, Mallace started 62 of his 69 appearances for the Golden Eagles, recording 13 goals and 13 assists, and was named 2011 Big East Conference Midfielder of the Year. A native of Torphichen, Scotland, he attended Henry Sibley High School in Mendota Heights, Minnesota after moving Stateside at the age of nine.

“Calum is a strong central player with a solid first touch and good range of passing, both short and long,” said Sounders FC Vice President of Soccer & Sporting Director Chris Henderson. “On top of that, he’s an experienced player who has played in big games, and his competitive nature will be an asset as the squad looks to continue to continually improve down the stretch.”

After a 4-0 road win over Minnesota United FC on Saturday, Sounders FC returns home for a matchup with Western Conference-leading Sporting Kansas City on Saturday, August 12 (1:00 p.m. PT / JOEtv, ROOT SPORTS, Univision-Seattle, KIRO Radio 97.3 FM, El Rey 1360 AM), with a shot at first place in the conference on the line.
