TUKWILA, Wash. - Seattle Sounders FC advanced to the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup after defeating the San Jose Earthquakes in a penalty kick shootout following a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night. Kenny Cooper scored his third goal of the tournament and Marcus Hahnemann made four saves, including a crucial stop in the shootout, as Seattle remained unbeaten in Open Cup play at Starfire Stadium.
Sounders FC will now face the Portland Timbers in the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals on July 9. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. PT at Starfire Stadium.
San Jose opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Steven Lenhart gathered a ball just outside the penalty area and blasted a shot just inside the near post for a 1-0 lead.
Sounders FC responded two minutes later when Lamar Neagle held the ball in a crowded penalty area, then foundto Cooper for a 10-yard shot past David Bingham to tie the game.
The score remained level after extra time and the match was decided in a penalty kick shootout. Gonzalo Pineda, Marco Pappa and Brad Evans all converted their attempts before Neagle converted the deciding shot. Khari Stephenson converted his attempt for San Jose, followed by Alan Gordon's shot, which hit the post, and JJ Koval's shot, which was saved by Hahnemann.
With the result, Sounders FC remained unbeaten (15-0-1) at home in Open Cup play, including a 13-0-1 record at Starfire Stadium.
Sounders FC out-shot San Jose, 31-15, totaling the most shots in club history in the Open Cup. Seattle also finished with a 10-4 shots on goal advantage and earned 19 corner kicks to San Jose's seven.
Neagle nearly gave Seattle the lead in the 43rd minute when his flicked header from an Evans cross hit the far post before being cleared. Neagle had another dangerous opportunity in extra time when Pappa played him behind the defense, but Bingham came up with the save.
Chad Barrett was dangerous for Seattle when he came on in the 78th minute, heading a Leo Gonzalez cross on frame with his first touch. Three minutes later, Barrett nearly scored on back-to-back chances, first rocketing a 12-yard volley off the far post, then heading a ball just over the crossbar after the ensuing corner.
Bingham finished the game with nine saves, including a point-blank stop in the 13th minute on a Neagle header at the near post and a 30th minute sprawling stop on a Pappa free kick.
The league-leading Sounders FC returns to MLS action on Saturday at D.C. United. Kickoff is at 4:00 p.m. PT at RFK Stadium.
