Sounders FC Head Coach Sigi Schmid will miss tonight's MLS match against San Jose because of a family commitment, as the Rave Green boss attends his eldest son Erik’s wedding.
Throughout his storied MLS career Schmid has missed only a handful of matches, largely due to similar family obligations. While with the Columbus Crew in 2008, Schmid attended daughter Lacey’s wedding, followed by son Kurt’s wedding date in Sounders FC’s inaugural MLS season when the club faced Houston on July 11, 2009. Additionally, Schmid served a one-match suspension on October 21, 2012 when his side faced FC Dallas. Similar to the Houston match in 2009 and the Dallas contest in 2012, Schmid’s top Assistant Coach Brian Schmetzer will man the bench in his stead for Saturday night's fixture.
Schmid returns to Seattle on Monday, and will be on the bench for the club’s next match, an international friendly against Mexican side Club Tijuana on March 24.
