The Seattle Sounders’ road to a potential fifth U.S. Open Cup title will go through Salt Lake City.
U.S. Soccer announced Thursday that the Sounders will take on Real Salt Lake in the Round of 16 of the historic tournament on June 28 at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. The match will be live streamed on SoundersFC.com, beginning at 7 p.m. PT.
The Sounders beat the Kitsap Pumas of the Premier Development League (PDL) 2-0 on Wednesday night at Starfire Sports in Tukwila to advance out of the fourth round.
This will mark the second time in the Sounders’ MLS history that they’ll meet RSL in the USOC after the two teams met in a play-in game in 2009. The Sounders won that game 4-1 at Starfire Stadium.
RSL beat the Sounders 2-1 in MLS play earlier this year at Rio Tinto Stadium. RSL have never won the U.S. Open Cup, but advanced to the final in 2013 before losing to D.C. United.
The winner of the Sounders-RSL showdown will take on the winner of a Round of 16 matchup between the Portland Timbers and the LA Galaxy, played at Providence Park in Portland.
The Sounders last won the U.S. Open Cup in 2014, the fourth title in franchise history. They are tied with the Chicago Fire for the most USOC titles among MLS franchises.
