The Seattle Sounders will take on the LA Galaxy in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup on July 20, the first time the two teams have met in the USOC in five years.
The Galaxy will host the match at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.
The Galaxy beat the Portland Timbers 1-0 in the USOC Round of 16 in Portland on Wednesday, one night after the Sounders booked their ticket to the quarterfinals with a dramatic win over Real Salt Lake in penalty kicks at Rio Tinto Stadium.
The Sounders and Galaxy have a lengthy and contentious history in MLS regular season and postseason play, but they’ve only met twice in the USOC. The Sounders beat LA in the 2010 quarterfinals and again in the same round a year later en route to winning the tournament title each year.
The teams have not met during the MLS regular season this year, but will meet at CenturyLink Field on July 9 and again on July 31.
The Sounders return to MLS regular season play at Toronto FC on Saturday.
