The Seattle Sounders are back in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup for the first time since 2014 after a dramatic win on Tuesday night at Real Salt Lake, and will now wait until Wednesday night to learn their next opponent.
The Sounders will face the winner of the Round of 16 matchup between the LA Galaxy and Portland Timbers, the last of six USOC games to be played on Wednesday. The Timbers will host the game at Providence Park in Portland.
Regardless of which team wins on Wednesday night, the Sounders will play their quarterfinal game on the road on July 20, the result of the USOC draw that took place earlier this month and set the Sounders on a tough path to a fifth Open Cup title.
The Sounders have not played the LA Galaxy during the MLS regular season this year, but last played them in the USOC in the quarterfinals of the 2011 tournament, winning 3-1.
They haven’t played the Timbers this season either, but the two Cascadia rivals have met numerous times since the Sounders joined MLS in 2009, including Sounders wins in 2009, 2010 and 2014 and a win for the Timbers last year.
