PORTLAND, OR. – For the second consecutive match, the Sounders Academy came up big for Seattle Sounders FC 2. This time, it was midfielder John Magnus as S2 dropped Cascadia rivals Portland Timbers 2 in a 2-1 victory at Providence Park on Tuesday afternoon.
Magnus was involved in both S2 goals as he recorded a goal and an assist in his first start for S2. The first came in the 35th minute when Magnus played a brilliant ball over the top of the box and into forward Myron Samuel who was lurking at the back post and snuck it past goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh. The goal is Samuel's first of the season.
S2 struck again in the 43rd minute when a botched defensive clearance ricocheted off of Magnus and fell neatly into the bottom right corner. Though he didn’t technically play the ball, Magnus is credited with the goal.
T2 pulled one back in the second half when midfielder Blake Bodily skillfully lobbed a header over goalkeeper Charlie Lyon after timing his run into the middle of the area. However, T2 were unable to find the equalizer as S2 held on for the 2-1 victory.
The result marks the first time S2 have recorded consecutive victories so far this season as they dropped their other Cascadia rival, Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 just five days ago. S2 returns home to take on Swope Park Rangers on June 26 at home after enjoying a long break.
