The Seattle Sounders fell 1-0 to the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday night at Lumen Field, with Lucas Halter scoring the winner for the visitors in the first half.
Seattle controlled much of the play from the opening whistle, pinning back the Dynamo with sustained possession and snuffing out the danger every time Houston tried to counter.
The first quality chance of the night came in the 13th minute when JesĂºs Ferreira split four defenders with a pass to Sebastian Gomez, who cut inside and laid the ball back to Cristian Roldan. Seattle’s captain uncorked a shot from distance that forced Houston goalkeeper Jonathon Bond into a full-extension diving save.
Houston tallied the game-winning goal against the run of play from a corner kick in the 26th minute. Seattle’s defense missed the initial header at the near post, and the ball skipped through to Halter to head home unmarked.
In the 41st minute, Seattle produced a pair of quality chances in search of an equalizer. First, Ferreira unleashed a swerving shot from distance that nearly deflected in off Bond. Just 30 seconds later, Albert RusnĂ¡k smashed a shot destined for the bottom corner that but was denied by a sprawling save from Bond.
It was a similar script to start the second half as Seattle held the lion’s share of possession while limiting Houston’s threat in transition.
In the 60th minute, Peter Kingston found Gomez open at the back post with a chipped pass, but a Houston defender broke up the play before the Academy alum could shoot. Eight minutes later, Kingston played a driven ball into the box that found the run of Jordan Morris, but his headed effort flashed wide of the goal.
Houston went into bend-don’t-break mode for the next 20 minutes as Seattle sent wave after wave of attack. And while the Sounders created some good moments, they struggled to translate them into clear-cut chances.
The Sounders got a great chance at an equalizer in the 89th minute when a mis-cleared shot fell to Dejan Joveljić about 10 yards out, but his goal-bound shot was blocked by a Houston defender.
Seattle’s best chance of the night came three minutes later when Paul Arriola placed a headed shot at the back across the goal, but Bond scrambled across the line to save the effort and deny Snyder Brunell a tap-in.
