It’s that time of year again.
On Wednesday night, the Seattle Sounders have a chance to secure an 11th consecutive postseason berth. Listed below is a scenario that would see the Rave Green clinch a spot in the 2019 Audi MLS Cup playoffs.
The Sounders will clinch a playoffs berth if:
- San Jose Earthquakes lose or tie vs. Philadelphia Union AND
- Portland Timbers lose or tie vs. New England Revolution
This season also marks the first iteration of the league’s new playoff format, where seven teams from each conference will qualify and each round features single-elimination matches. LAFC has already locked up the top seed in the Western Conference, which grants them a bye in the first round, while the three remaining teams in the top four will each host a home match in the opening round.
With two matches remaining, the Sounders could finish anywhere from second to eighth. Since the Sounders play both the San Jose Earthquakes on September 29 (4:30 p.m. PT; JOEtv, YouTube TV, Univision-Seattle, 1090 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM) and Minnesota United on October 6 (1:00 p.m. PT; JOEtv, YouTube TV, Univision-Seattle, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM | TICKETS), the team controls its own destiny.
