The United States men’s national team played to a scoreless draw in a friendly with Serbia on Sunday at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, Calif.
Seattle Sounders defender Chad Marshall started at center back, earning his first cap in over seven years. His last appearance came on Jan. 23, 2010, against Honduras. Marshall went the full 90 minutes in the draw.
Sounders forward Jordan Morris checked in as a substitute in the 74th minute for Jozy Altidore. Seattle defender Brad Evans was on the 23-man roster but did not play.
The match was the first in head coach Bruce Arena’s second stint in charge after taking over for Jurgen Klinsmann last November. The U.S. will travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., to take on Jamaica on Feb. 3 (4 p.m. PT; FS1, UniMas) in another friendly before resuming 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying in March.
ESPN analyst Taylor Twellman said before the match that Arena will not call in Sounders forward Clint Dempsey for the March qualifiers, citing Dempsey’s health and need for reps with the Sounders first. Dempsey, who has been sidelined since last August with an irregular heartbeat, has been in full training in Sounders preseason.
The U.S. currently sit in last in the Hexagonal after two matches. They will host Honduras on March 24 before a road date with Panama on March 28.
