The Seattle Sounders got all they could handle from the Kitsap Pumas in their fourth-round U.S. Open Cup matchup at Starfire Soccer on Wednesday, but Cristian Roldan’s first professional goal and a late insurance tally from Joevin Jones would be the difference in a 2-0 Seattle victory.
The teams battled to a scoreless deadlock in the first half, but Seattle broke through in the 71st-minute after an Aaron Kovar free kick took a deflection and found Roldan in the Kitsap penalty box. The second-year University of Washington midfielder lofted his attempt over Kitsap ‘keeper Mike Grosey and into the net to give Seattle the 1-0 lead. The score would hold until stoppage time, when Jones finished a breakaway to officially punch Seattle’s ticket to the USOC Round of 16. The Sounders will learn their opponent on Thursday, June 16.
